Ludum Dare #26 : Post mortem
0This weekend took place the 26th edition of the Ludum Dare event. So as I was busy for half the weekend, I decided to enter the contest, but with only 24 hours to make a game.
This time, with my coworkers from Atelier 801, we decided to work together, not on the same game, but at the same place, the company’s headquarters.
It was really a good experience, and it helped me to focus on working.
As I mention in my “I’m in” post, I’ve used Haxe to make a flash game.
You can find the game here : What the fish !! and the vote form here.
How I prepared
- For each theme in the final theme voting round, I’ve tried to come with a game concept. So before the beginning of the contest, I had lots of ideas.
- I went to bed early the day before, so I was able to get up in the early morning.
What went right
- I found a really simple (minimalist) game idea, where you have to kill fishing boats with potatoes (wait… what??). And of course, do not kill the pink salmons ;)
- I made all the sprites really quickly, because I didn’t want to lose time on this.
- I make flash games for a living, so the code is not really what’s bothering me the most.
- Working with other people also participating to the Ludum Dare contest sets up a really nice working atmosphere.
What could have been better
- The theme :D, because I had other (great?) ideas, but ideas that didn’t really fit with this theme
- To have a little more time…
Ludum Dare #26 : I’m in
1I’m going to use this Ludum Dare for an excuse and make my first game of the year, despite all my efforts (… what a shame…).
This time I will be at Atelier801‘s headquarters (in Lille, France), with my coworkers who will also participate !

My entry for Ludum Dare 23
2Last weekend, I entered the great contest that is Ludum Dare. For those who don’t know what the Ludum Dare is, it’s an event that takes place every 3 months, and that gathers a lot of people wanting to create games… in only 48 hours for the solo contest, and around a precise theme. To give you an idea of the popularity of this contest, people submitted over 1200 games during the weekend!
When the subject of this Ludum Dare has been announced (Tiny World), a lot of people started to post on the official website all their ideas, and that it was an inspiring subject … but it wasn’t my case. So I took 2 or 3 hours looking for a good idea and trying to have a good concept.
Thanks to the coffee, I managed to finish my game in time to submit it (click to see the entry). Its name ? Pixel World !
How I prepared
- Trying concepts using HaxePunk to start learning this great tool
- Used tiled map editor with HaxePunk
- In fact, I prepared all the tools I needed
What went right
- I tried to stay simple and to focus on the concept
- I used tools I was familiar with (HaxePunk, MonoDevelop and Gimp), so I didn’t lose time on that
- Thanks to my lack of drawing abilities, I managed not to spend too much time on the graphic design (actually, it helped me to find a cool concept!)
What could have been better
- More updates on my progress (I tried to stay away from the website, in order not to be distracted by watching the other’s amazing games)
- I spent too much time on the level design : I tried to stay simple, but didn’t want to have a game that was too simple to play…
Next time
- I will try to add sounds/music to my game
- Much more updates on my work on the website
- Less coffee ? (just kidding… or am I?)
